Gang Prevention
What we do and how we do it
Reducing the impact of gangs
Sar Kids works for public benefit to reduce the impact of gangs, peer on peer abuse and both gang and group behaviour on the lives of young people and, by extension, their families and communities. It is based upon on principles of ‘protection’, ‘prevention’ and ‘partnership’. It seeks to protect young people at risk of association with gangs, crime, violence and exploitation; prevent their entry into gangs, gang life and abusive relationships by allowing them to make informed decisions; and works through partnerships of trust and confidence with schools and young people themselves to address these issues.
It does this work through the provision of public health and public safety programmes, delivering evidence-based preventative education sessions to students. Such programmes are intended for the benefit of young people, their parents, schools and the wider community, and are conceived and delivered in partnership with police and other organisations.
Evidence based research
In order to ensure authenticity in dialogue with a young audience, and the maximum likelihood of prevention and protection being successful, these programmes depend upon academic evidence of ‘what works’. For this reason Sar Kids commissions and collaborates in evidence based research and research synthesis on law enforcement, criminal justice and public health issues relating to young peoples’ involvement in gangs, crime and violence.
Further, it publishes, or causes to be published, the results of this work for the widest possible benefit. In this endeavour it works in partnership with academic researchers, police forces, policy-makers and service delivery agencies where necessary to provide rigour to its programmes and guidance.
